When I first started to move away from Old El Paso and Ortega taco seasoning, it was really tough. I loved the way they blended their seasonings but it wasn’t worth all of the added junk that came along with it and made for some really bloated days thereafter. Taco Tuesdays in my house always turn out to be a “surprise seasoning” mixture as I’m constantly tweaking my recipes.

There are hundreds of ways to create a clean taco seasoning mix. You might have to play with these base spices to get yours just the way you like it.  Love to spice it up, add more cayenne. Don’t love the heat? Leave it out.

Here is the base recipe for the clean taco seasoning I love most now days for my Tuesday night staple:

Clean Taco Seasoning Ingredients

  • 2 tbsp. ground cumin
  • 1 tsp. paprika
  • 1/2 tsp. cayenne pepper (optional. add 1/2tsp more of paprika if omitted)
  • 1/2 tsp. onion powder
  • 1/2 tsp. garlic powder
  • 1/4 tsp. ground black pepper
  • 1/4 tsp. chili powder


Blend all spices in a bowl. Add 1T per pound of meat.
